FERNANDO ZÓBEL (Filipino, 1924-1984)

Spanish-Filipino Fernando Zobel is a sophisticated and complex abstract artist of the mid-20th century. In an illustrious career spanning five decades which displayed distinct periods of artistic evolution and experimentation, Zobel produced works reflecting his deep understanding of spatial balance and meditational gravitas. Executed in 1961, Argandas (a highlight of the Gerardo Rueda collection) shows compositional influences from his celebrated Saetas series of the ‘50s; but inclines towards a monochromatic sensibility and a greater use of void space, which highlights the dramatic tension of the central linear form.

I NYOMAN MASRIADI (Indonesian, B. 1973)

Within the last decade, Indonesian artist I Nyoman Masriadi has established himself as a leading voice in Southeast Asian contemporary art. Within his satirical works, striking visual anecdotes are derived from careful observations of social life and human behavior. In ‘Masriadi Presents – Attack from Website’, the artist documents our obsessive fascination with the internet age and the ubiquitous branding of the Microsoft Desktop. However our slavish devotion to this simulated universe leads to the animated icon of a great white shark leaping off the screen to cannibalize the viewer; a cryptic comment on the hazards of technology.
